Peggy Jenning's notes
Mari Bailey brought some neat trophies suggestions for the 2009 specialty trophies as did Marilyn. Mari also provided an example of a Christmas card used to raise funds for a national specialty. I asked for photos and website addresses so we could share. I will post those to the list.
The discussion was kind of rambling between - ACDCA National Specialty 2009 and Texas ACD Club organization. My notes reflect my summary of the discussions. I have also included some background information and links to make the discussion more intelligible to others reading the notes.
Please read it over and feel free to make any comments, additions and corrections
to my summary. You can view the list discussion online at

First off the Texas Club is being organized to provide a network of knowledgeable owners, breeders and competitors to promote the breed. You can now visit http://www.tacdc.com to see the nominated board.
We are inviting all Texans who are interested in organizing a Texas club that will do all in its powers to protect and advance the interests of the ACD breed and to encourage breed competition at dog shows, herding tests and trial, performance event and host a National Specialty for the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America.
To that end, we need a board, an organized entity ( profit, nonprofit, bylaws, a bank account, and a schedule of meetings and events.
Those of us organizing this club propose we have a vote at Nolan River to elect a board that will setup the club. We can vote online and in person at Nolan River. My hope is that we will build a broad base of members with a board that reflects their interests.
Several of the NoMads told me that matches were a waste of time and did not bring in money. I explained that the Texas club needs these to build community and education within the state. Conformation, obedience and rally events currently proposed(Elgin and at Stetler's ranch) are mainly for building knowledge and community.
It is not so much that it raises money, it brings Texas people together and gets folks ready for competition.
A goal of people organizing the Texas club is to host the 2009 ACDCA National Specialty in Texas, Oct 10-16 (Sat-Friday). Deb Casey, Gaye Warren, Michael Stetler, Noel De Bruin and Peggy Jennings were at the 2006 Annual Meeting and proposed the specialty come to Texas. Deb's experience budgeting and administering the 2003 specialty gave the ACDCA membership the confidence to vote that the specialty move to Texas for 2009. Deb has reserved the Expo Center at Belton, Texas. This was the site of the 2003 specialty. You can go to http://www.acdca.org to read about the 2006 specialty and upcoming 2007 specialty.
- Lori Grahm is the newly elected South Central Director (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri).
- The Regional Directors shall be responsible for overseeing the shows, encouraging matches, and promoting the Club and the breed whenever possible within their regions.
- b. The Regional Directors shall promote intra regional competition and cooperation.
- c. The Regional Directors shall act as liaison between the Club and their regions, keeping these members informed of all Club or AKC activities or both, and disseminate directives, and regulations as are prescribed by the Board of Directors in addition to those specified in these Bylaws.
- d. The Regional Directors shall keep a roll of members within their region and may request an assistant or assistants to be approved by the Board of Directors. ACDCA Bylaws Article IV
- The national club is a member of the AKC. We have representation at AKC through longtime ACDCA member Kathy Hamilton. The objectives of the ACDCA are found at ACDCA bylaws Article I - Name & Objectives
- These people are the national specialty show committee: * ChairĀ Scott HamiltonĀ redwing@teleport.com Members: Joyce Rowland, Pam Gipson Beaty, and Lynda White
- Mari Baily and other NoMad club members have championed the idea of an all breed agility trial at the ACDCA National Specialty. Since the specialty is held to showcase the ACD, I believe the reason for the all breed idea going forward is that Mari has made a passionate argument that an all breed trial will bring in enough entries to pay a significant chunk of the national specialty costs (~$5,000 I think) and draw in more ACD agility competitors than previous years. I don't recall how many agility participants we had in 2003 ACD only. In 2003 the McKinney trial was held the same weekend as our trial.
- Deb has asked Mari to develop a budget that could be used to evaluate the
benefits of all breed and help plan the trial. Mari said that she was
stumped at developing a budget for all breed agility. I suggested to her
that any costs that were revenue neutral with the ACD cost just list as an
item. For example, cost of facility is the same either way.
I asked Mari to remember that we (TACDC and ACDCA) do not all know the
titles and awards in agility so spell it out and don't assume we know
anything.
The fly in the ointment is that the Dallas-Ft. Worth English Springer Spaniel Association holds an all breed trial in McKinney. Projecting to 2009, their trial would be the weekend of Oct 10, 11 2009. This year they had 654 entries and 618 competitors. My Yahoo map says that McKinney is 168 mies from Belton and Dallas 136 from Belton. The club's territory is Dallas.
I don't know what AKC's map says the mileage is. The distance is important to getting AKC approval for an all breed trial that weekend.
The other alternative is to speculate on getting increased attendance at a weekday trial. I suppose this could be the Friday before (Oct 8, 2009) or during the show week. We would likely get more national participation if we have the agility trial during the weekend with obedience and rally or during the week (Oct 12-16). During the week we bump into scheduling and resource considerations.
Lori Grahm said she would take on working on the agility scheduling problem. I urged Lori to work closely with Deb. Mari does not want to work on agility if the trial will not be all breed or there is a chance that it will not. Since the final decisions rest with the national club, we just can't guarantee an all breed event.
- Lori has agreed to:
We had been asked by people on the national committee who have influence in the club and experience putting on nationals if we were keeping the same schedule - we said "yes" and they approved our bid.
I believe our best chance for a successful nationals is to unite under a solid schedule and budget proposal early.
So we were doing two things, planning to host a nationals and building a
club.
